Why Sustainable Events? (Even Though I Don’t Love Planning Them) - It All Started with Tobago's Green Heart

Yes, I’m currently pursuing studies in Event Management Services and Planning.
But the next question is always: “Why sustainable events?”
Simply put — it has everything to do with the land of my birth: Sweet, sweet Tobago.
Tobago’s motto has always been “Sun, Sea, Sand, and Scenery—with lots and lots of green.”
To me, it has never been just a slogan.
It's a love letter to my island, capturing Tobago's soul in one poetic line: vibrant, grounded, alive with nature.
Rooted in sun, sea, sand, and scenery—with Tobago's green heart at the center of it all.
Tobago continues to dominate in sustainable tourism, strengthening its position as a leader with numerous Blue Flag awards. We're fast becoming a premier sustainable destination in the Caribbean, alongside nature champions like Dominica and Guyana.

But what does this have to do with sustainable events?
Sustainable events are gatherings designed with intention—not just to celebrate or connect, but to leave a lighter footprint on the planet and a deeper imprint on the heart.
These thoughtfully planned experiences minimize environmental impact, support local communities, and prioritize long-term positive change by:
✔️ Minimize waste
✔️ Support local and ethical vendors
✔️ Use eco-conscious materials
✔️ Conserve water and energy
✔️ Celebrate both people and planet
✔️ Leaving a positive legacy—socially, environmentally, and economically
From beach weddings and wellness retreats to forest hikes and cultural festivals — Tobago already lives and breathes sustainability.

My Vision for Tobago
While Tobago has been a leader in breathtaking destination beach weddings and nature experiences like bird watching and hiking through our oldest forest reserves, I wanted to see more.
I wanted to explore how we could expand beyond traditional beach weddings to showcase the full potential of sustainable event hosting.
Here's my confession: I HATE PLANNING, BUT I LOVE WRITING AND CREATING CONTENT AROUND SUSTAINABLE EVENTS.
Writing, blogging, and storytelling have always been my life, passion, and profession.
While I'm passionate about nature and the environment, my strength lies in content creation and strategy.

The Bigger Picture
My hope is that fellow event planning professionals will specialize in this area and build thriving businesses in eco-conscious and sustainable events.
I'm committed to pushing this forward through:
🌱 Sustainable event content creation and strategy
🌱 Promoting Tobago as the premier eco-sustainable event destination of the Caribbean
Because let's be honest—Caribbean people love to party!
And with the tourism industry capitalizing on eco and sustainable tourism, why not lead the way in sustainable celebrations that honor our beautiful islands?
The future of events is green, and it starts with the choices we make today.
What does sustainability mean to you in your industry? I'd love to hear your thoughts! 💚
